RELAX AND RESTORE MASSAGE SERVICES

Massage Therapy

What is Massage Therapy?
Massage is a hands-on manipulation of the soft tissues of the body, including muscle, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments and joints.

Massage therapy treatment aims to develop, maintain, rehabilitate or augment physical functioning, relieve or prevent physical dysfunction and pain as well as enhance the well being of the client.

Massage treatments have a direct therapeutic effect and improve the health by acting directly on the muscular, nervous and circulatory systems.

Massage is something we do instinctively whenever we injure ourselves. It began with the cave dwellers who, like us, rubbed their bruises. It can be traced through many ancient cultures including those of Cina, Greece, Egypt and Italy, where various forms of massage were used before the time of Christ.

Present day massage therapy began in the late 1700's in Sweden, when Henrik Ling developed the systematic method of therapeutic massage based on physiology. Swedish massage is the basis for most treatments which are given today.

Massage is not only medically sound but beneficial to both mind and body. It is widely prescribed by physicians and chiropractors who have become aware of the tremendous potential that it provides to promote healing and create an overall sense of well being in their patients.

Who Can Benefit From Massage Therapy?
Basically everyone...  It is recommended for:
  • Relief of pain
  • Improved circulation/lymph drainage
  • Muscle rehabilitation and improved joint mobility
  • Increased body awareness
  • General relaxation
  • Pregnancy

Massage is effective in the treatment of:
  • Headaches, including migraines
  • Back and neck pain

  • Neuritis/neuralgia
  • Arthritis

What To Expect
The practice of massage therapy involves the assessment & treatment of soft tissue and joints of the body by means of:
  • range of motion testing
  • muscle testing
  • soft tissue manipulating
(which involves massage, trigger point therapy, myofascial release, etc.)
  • hydrotherapy
  • remedial exercise program
  • client self-help programs

A treatment plan based on the client's individual assessment & health history will be proposed by the therapist prior to treatment. Client information, both written and verbal, is completely confidential and will be safeguarded by the therapist unless the client's consent to release the records is obtained.

The therapist must obtain the client's consent to work on any part of the body, regardless of whether the client is fully clothed or fully or partially draped (any part of the body that is not being treated must be properly covered). The client has the right to withdraw their consent at ant time. The therapist will assure the privacy and respect of the client at all times. The fee structure and method of payment will be agreed upon prior to the beginning of treatment.

Are There Different Types of Massage?
Yes, there are 3 major types of massage: Therapeutic, Relaxation and Sports Massage. The difference between them would be in the speed & depth that the various techniques are applied. Besides the basic Swedish techniques, the therapist has other modalities that can be combined to maximize the results during one session.

Verifying Credentials Of An RMT.
All Registered Massage Therapists (RMT's) have completed at least 2200 hours of studies, passed provincial exams set by the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario, and been issued both a photo ID card and Certification of Registration. You have the right to ask to see either of these pieces of identification in order to be assured that your therapist is registered.

Who Pays for Massage Therapy?
Many private insurance companies and most extended health care plans provide full or partial coverage for massage therapy. It is always best to check your plan first to see how much is covered and under what conditions. Many plans require a physician's prescription before treatments begin. Insurance coverage is usually provided for injuries sustained in a traffic accident or while working.
